For the 2025 edition of WAAW World, women artists of diverse generations and geographic backgrounds come together to share their artistic investigations, with textile as a central medium and a lens for exploring contemporary themes. Curated by Katia Salvany, the exhibition highlights the intersections between textile practices and conceptual, contemporary approaches to artmaking.
Textile art, long regarded as a minor or domestic craft, has evolved significantly—gaining visibility and recognition in major international exhibitions and museum collections, particularly in recent decades. From its origins in quiet, invisible domestic labor to its current status as a powerful medium of expression, textile continues to carry deep emotional, historical, and cultural resonance.
At Galpão 556, textile has a personal and professional significance. For gallery founder Daniela Tonetti, whose roots lie in haute couture production, this medium represents a living connection to tradition, craftsmanship, and memory. Since 2024, textile-focused exhibitions have become part of the gallery’s curatorial program, celebrating the handmade and its power to evoke ancestral, feminine, maternal, and historical narratives.
