I-Woman exhibition presented by Carmo Johnson Projects
Carmo Johnson Projects presents I-Woman, a powerful group exhibition inspired by the poem of the same name by Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo. As part of the global initiative Women Artists’ Art Week World (WAAW World), this exhibition brings together the works of six remarkable women artists whose practices are deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions, feminine knowledge, and contemporary resistance.
Featured artists include Kaya Agari, Kássia Borges, Yaka, Rita Huni Kuin, Naine Terena, and Nara Guichon—each exploring themes of cultural memory, gender, environment, and identity through a range of mediums, from ceramics and painting to textile and installation art.
From Agari’s subversion of social roles through body paint to Guichon’s transformation of ocean waste into intricate weavings, I-Woman offers a shared space where ancestral knowledge and artistic innovation converge. These works not only reflect the artists’ individual journeys, but also honour the matriarchal lineages of mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and ancestors who shaped them.
Through this convergence of voices and practices, I-Woman becomes more than an exhibition, it is a living archive of the feminine as a vital creative force. Join us in witnessing this deeply resonant tribute to resilience, memory, and possibility.
